Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy

The new opera from Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans, based on the eponymous work by Witold Gombrowicz, has its Belgian premiere one year after it was written for the Opéra National de Paris.
Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy, the new opera by Philippe Boesmans, is based the eponymous play by Witold Gombrowicz. Crossing over between tragedy and the grotesque, it deals with the desire and disgust inspired by difference and abnormality, while thrashing the middleclass conventions. Silent, fickle and passive, Yvonne is the young woman that the crown prince Philippe decides to marry as a game and to silence others who are urging him to marry. From the moment she arrives at the court, this disturbing creature serves to radically unveil everyone’s troubles and frustrations. Everyone soon begins fantasising about killing this strange woman. Luc Bondy wrote the libretto and the opera was directed by Patrick Davin as the follow-up to his collaboration with the Belgian composer, who proposed a subtle and sparkling score, harking to the past while confirming again the fine quality of his personal language.
