When reading becomes a journey: the European Book Prize

All Cultural events

Because reading is a pleasure, a vector for exchange and sharing, the European Book Prize is designed to promote European values and to help bring the Union to life among its citizens.

European Book Prize 2010

The European Book Prize will reveal its fourth winner at the European Parliament on 8 December 2010. This event, created in 2007 by the ’Esprit d’Europe’ association, is designed to encourage the dynamic exchange and dissemination of European culture and languages.
Sponsored and actively supported by Jaques Delors, former President of the European Commission, the European Book Prize rewards a work published in one of the 27 Member States of the European Union during the previous year which expresses a vision of Europe.

And the winner is...

The European Book Prize 2008 was awarded to Tony Judt for his work ‘Postwar, A History of Europe Since 1945’, in which the British historian invited us to rediscover a long period in European history (1945-2005) that most of us thought we knew.

Essay and novel take the 2009 prize…

The European Book Prize 2009 was awarded to two authors:

  •  in the ‘essay’ category: to French MEP Sylvie Goulard, for the second edition of her book ‘Europe for dummies’, an amusing, informative and instructive guide to Europe;
  •  in the ‘novel’ category: to Polish writer and journalist Mariusz Szczygiel, for his work entitled ‘Gottland’, a portrait of the former Czechoslovakia in the form of a series of news items, narratives and reports.

Men and women of letters, the winners of the European Book Prize 2010 are…

Whether you are an enthusiast, just curious, or a man or woman of letters, you should know that any book published in the European Union between 1 October 2009 and 30 September 2010 may be submitted to the selection committee.
The sponsoring committee will meet on Tuesday, 28 September, with Jacques Delors chairing the session, and will choose the final selection for the essays and novels/stories.
The jury, chaired by German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff, will shortly announce the winners of the 2010 prize.
The prize will be awarded in Brussels at the European Parliament on 8 December at 18.00.
