The trade union organisations, awareness of the environment and a socially just transition toward a low-carbon society
(1) The EU should be aware of the importance of the role of trade union organisations and workers in raising consciousness regarding environmental questions. (2) How can we act in such a way that the transition to a low-carbon society is socially just?
The objective of the workshop is to examine two major questions and to try to contribute concrete responses to them:
- How can we bring out the role of trade union organisations more in relation to raising awareness of the environment among workers and their representatives by means of sharing and disseminating the existing good practices in Belgium and in the Member States, in order to identify possible paths for Community action.
- Training, education, strengthening of the capacity for intervention and raising the awareness of workers and their representatives is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for a transition to a low-carbon economy with social justice.
Of course climate change will affect all aspects of our lives, our modes of production and consumption, but also the quality and conditions of work. The measures taken to combat climate change will lead to major transformations in the working world and will generate opportunities for workers and the trade unions, but also challenges.
The final product of this workshop will be a discussion accompanied by practical considerations regarding the best way of involving the social partners in the transition to a low-carbon society.
