Towers and population density in European cities
The question of residential towers is in the news again in numerous cities: it gives rise to a number of debates, and the colloquium aims at taking stock, especially in regard to the objectives of compact cities, and giving the floor to the different actors in the city.
The colloquium aims at clarifying the debate on the usefulness and the repercussions of apartment towers, through speeches by professionals, university lecturers and political leaders.
It will bring out the problems of the relations between towers and cities, from the point of view both of urban planning (population densities, urban functioning, landscape, public spaces, etc.) and of strategy (urban marketing, urban renewal, international positioning, and so on). It will also approach technical questions such as environmental nuisances, green buildings, mixing functions and uses, the regulatory framework, the financial constraints, and the like.
Different case studies will be presented to show the diversity of responses provided by European cities.
The colloquium will make room for two debates: the first between the thinkers regarding the cities, and the second between political leaders.
The colloquium will close with an exceptional lecture by the architect Christian de Portzamparc.
