sustain@brussels: European seminar on Sustainable Urban Renewal

Next September 15 at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels a one-day seminar dedicated to the best European practices concerning Sustainable Urban Renewal, in particular within the framework of European financing programmes (structural funds).
One-day colloquium, the morning of which will be dedicated to the best Brussels practices concerning sustainability, on the socio-economic level and regarding the built structure and public spaces, and on the environmental level. In the afternoon European experts will present projects under way in their countries.
Brussels kaleidoscope
In the course of the morning, in a series of short speeches (each from seven to eight minutes), different experts and actors of the Brussels-Capital Region will present the work carried out during the last few years concerning sustainable urban renewal.
These examples, chosen for their innovative nature, will show the usefulness and the use of the structural funds in the Brussels landscape.
The speakers, with different horizons: civil society, real estate promoters, public authorities, experts; will share with us their experiences of the process of citizen participation, of an exemplary financing plan, of urban renewal that is high-performance in terms of energy but also of excellent architectural quality. The presentation will also give an image of the specific features of a region like Brussels.
An architect-town planner of international renown will propose in conclusion his reading of Brussels vitality.
European mosaic
During the afternoon European experiences will be presented to us. The talks will concern development projects in neighbourhoods in cities of various sizes at different scales.
From France to Germany, and including The Netherlands, we will find out about ambitious projects that are currently redefining what urban planning and sustainable architecture are in Europe. From the sustainable renewal of existing neighbourhoods to the development of new districts or railway wastelands into sustainable areas, concrete examples will be presented in their current state of progress.
Citizen participation will not be left out, with the presentation of European actors in citizen participation, such as the network of "energy cities" in Europe.
Finally, Claude Jaquier, Director of Research at the CNRS, will conclude the afternoon with a transversal reading of these different examples, and will put them in perspective in relation to the European investment programmes and their necessary evolution.
