Speakers’ Corner: Why is Belgium not just bilingual?
During the Speakers’ Corner, a number of speakers will focus on the issue of language in Belgium. Belgium is officially trilingual and that fact constantly confronts policymakers with challenges. The current language laws illustrate the creative compromises which Belgium is so famous for. Nevertheless, the agreements made continue to offer food for political debate, especially with regard to Brussels and de Vlaamse Rand.
Professor Hendrik Vuye (Constitutional Law at the University of Namur) will guide you through the Belgian linguistic conflict in a comprehensible way. Luc Van den Brande, former Minister-President of the Flemish Government and current President of the Liaison Agency Flanders-Europe, approaches the language policy from an international perspective. The speakers will also answer questions from the audience. VRT journalist Michaël Van Droogenbroeck will act as moderator (public broadcasting company VRT) will act as moderator.
The Speakers’ Corner is intended primarily for journalists, diplomats and expats who would like to know more about the language policy in Belgium. Participation is by invitation only. The lectures will be held in Dutch, with simultaneous translation provided in French, English and German.
There will be a reception afterwards.
The Speakers’ Corner is an organisation of the non-profit ‘de Rand’, in cooperation with the Agency for Local and Provincial Government of the Flemish Public administration.
