from 17 November 2010 to 18 November 2010
08:00 - 18:00

The conference will take stock of the situation for SMEs with respect to the reality of the market and initiatives to support technological innovation.

The conference will take stock of the situation for SMEs with respect to the reality of the market and initiatives to support technological innovation.

The focus will lie on the creation of synergies between initiatives existing at different levels (European, regional). This involves shaping a coherent vision for the innovation landscape for future Research policies in favour of SMEs.

Questions posed will address developments of R&D policies based on the needs of SMEs, and the role of the regions, the Member States, and the EU. Finally, the event we be concluded with debates on how to create an environment that fosters innovation amongst SMEs.

The conference’s primary objective will be to:

  • take stock of the current situation for SMEs, the reality of the market they operate in, the support measures available, especially for technological development, the lack of support in certain domains… The discussion will focus on the creation of synergies between initiatives existing at different levels (European, regional). This forum will also explicitly familiarise participants with the current tools/measures and economic opportunities available to SMEs ;
  • produce a coherent vision for the innovation landscape for future Research policies in favour of SMEs. We must take into account the close interconnections between research, innovation, and SMEs in order to build the Europe of the future.

The questions posed will include:

  • how to develop research and innovation policies based on the needs of SMEs?
  • what kind of research and innovation programme would best meet these needs?
  • what role should be played by the regions, Member States, and the EU?
  • how to create the conditions and the environment that will make SMEs more innovative?

Moreover, the conference will be an opportunity for SMEs, particular younger ones, to present themselves to major players in the sector and to learn from the experiences of SMEs who succeeded in conquering certain markets. All of this taking into account the difficulties SMEs face when attempting to penetrate a market, even after developing a quality product line.

Thus, the conference will offer a good opportunity for the various participants and players to discuss possibilities for future development of R&D by the SMEs themselves.
