    On Friday 10 September and Saturday 11 September 2010, Belgium is hosting the informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of the European Union, also known as the “Gymnich”. The name “Gymnich” refers to the site in Germany where an informal gathering of this type was first held during the German presidency of the Council of the European Union in 1974.

    Nowadays, people are more likely to move freely from one country to another within the EU, whether it’s for work, studies, or simply for fun. In this context of increasing mobility, it’s only natural for a certain number of ‘international’ couples to be formed. In any case, the stars in the eyes and butterflies in the stomach of the initial moments can soon be replaced by more technical questions: which legal system will regulate the future marriage of these "sweethearts without borders"?  What if there are conficts? Or worse, what about divorce?

    Tuesday afternoon Deputy Prime Minister for Employment and Equal Opportunities Joëlle Milquet attended a meeting of senior officials and experts of the European Union concerning gender equality, organised within the framework of the Belgian Presidency. She presented the Belgian Presidency’s programme concerning equality between women and men. For the Presidency, gender equality must be considered an absolute priority in all areas of society. Our programme fits into that of the Trio (Spain-Belgium-Hungary) and hinges on four priorities.

This informal ministerial meeting will focus on three issues: consumer protection, the infrastructure package and energy efficiency. On this occasion Commissioner Oettinger will also report on the progress of the reflections regarding the safety of offshore oil rigs. Finally, the EU Ministers will discuss the succession to the executive director of the International Energy Agency.
