In 2010, no fewer than 17 African countries will be celebrating 50 years of independence. In honour of the occasion, BOZAR and the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren are organising the festival Visionary Africa featuring concerts, exhibitions, performances and a literature festival. GEO-graphics is the central exhibition of this summer festival.
More than 200 participants from 27 countries met to think about the future of public libraries in Europe. They regard the librarian as a guide in the internet world and no longer as a book collector. They also suggest that public libraries communicate more about the added value they can offer.
Olivier Chastel expressed the EU’s concern about the human rights situation and stated that the EU deplores the deterioration of conditions for those defending human rights. “The issue of sexual violence is particularly alarming in this area”, added the Secretary of State for European Affairs.
Earlier this year the European Commission launched a proposal to introduce a European Heritage Label for the entire EU. The aim of the label is to highlight sites that bear witness to or are symbolic of European integration, ideals and history. Not just monuments and memorial sites but also cultural and natural landscapes will represent the common heritage.
