European Union deeply concerned about Iran

This Monday, 20 September 2010, Mr Paul Magnette, Minister for Climate and Energy Policy, took the floor during the 54th IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) General Conference, on behalf of the European Union. The candidate countries, the countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process, the potential candidates, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldavia and Norway, shared in the declaration that he delivered.
In Paul Magnette’s opinion, this general conference is a step in the struggle against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It will stress several positive events in the last few months.
In response to the historic agreement on the prospect of a denuclearised Middle East in May this year at the conference to revise the NNT, the European Union will be very specifically attentive to seeing that the IAEA has the necessary resources to carry out its missions successfully.
Nonetheless, "the EU is deeply worried about the serious and persisting problems that the Islamic Republic of Iran, the People’s Republic of Korea (RPK) and the Syrian Arab Republic pose for the non-proliferation regime," Paul Magnette declared at the IAEA forum.
"During the application of the third set of sanctions against IRAN, the EU showed its determination to maintain the spirit and the letter of the Non-proliferation Treaty without inconsistency," Paul Magnette added. “The EU cannot achieve this alone. The entire international community must exercise maximum pressure on the Iranian leaders."
In his speech, Paul Magnette also announced the demand of the European Union, in a context of terrorist threats, to strengthen the physical protection of nuclear installations. "Here as well we must demonstrate our joint responsibility confronted with the uncontrolled spreading of nuclear materials."
