Directives transposition: Vanackere and Chastel satisfied with Belgium’s very good results

On Tuesday, September 21st, Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, presented the results of the 21st Internal Market Scoreboard on transposition for the first half of 2010.
This was an important moment for Secretary of State for European Affairs, Olivier Chastel, who is responsible for coordinating the transposition of directives in Belgium, together with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Steven Vanackere.
“Our country, and Italy, made the most progress. We moved from 19th to 10th place in the European ranking” said Olivier Chastel. He feels that, among other things, this progress can be attributed to the tools Belgium began implementing in 2008 to improve its transposition system. These include the Eurtransbel database which is easy to use. An alert system with coloured indicators has also been implemented and an instruction manual was written for the database...
“We implemented an inclusive exercise in Belgium given the multitude of national and European players and the complexity of the files that make transposing directives a very intense but essential task in the process of European integration”, stated Olivier Chastel. The transposition of European directives is an important topic for all citizens living, working, and travelling in the European Union.
This coming Friday, Olivier Chastel will provide an assessment of the current results of the Internal Scoreboards for November 2010 and May 2011 to the Council of Ministers. “We must now stay the course to ensure that we repeat these good results at the next assessment and that they will translate into better Belgian results for infringement procedures”, added Steven Vanackere.
