Nuit blanche – 9th edition

Supported by the City of Brussels and organised in several European capitals, NUIT BLANCHE is a free cultural event open to all. Appealing both at an artistic and popular level, it encourages visitors to (re)discover or (re)acquaint themselves with the urban environment from a new perspective.
A festive night of participation, creativity and culture to experience the night in a new way.
NUIT BLANCHE invites visitors to experience the night differently, in a way that is creative, festive, participatory and fun. It invites the public to explore the City of Brussels and sets the scene for artists and creative talents.
Exhibitions, performances, films, multimedia projections, concerts, dance, interactive events… the craziest and most creative ideas of artists and designers from all disciplines invite the public to embark on a voyage of discovery, encounters and festivity in unexpected places.
This 9th edition takes to the streets of Brussels along the Rue Antoine Dansaert, rue Léon Lepage, Square Marguerite Duras, Vismet, Quai aux Pierres de Taille and Quai du Commerce.
NUIT BLANCHE seeks to promote greater respect for the environment, a sustainable economy, and a healthier and more mobile night on the town.
Each year, as part of its focus on public spaces, NUIT BLANCHE proposes a Great Pedestrian who hosts the not-to-be-missed "The Street Is Yours", a specially organised area dedicated entirely to artists whose works will adorn the Brussels pavements for one night only.
The success of NUIT BLANCHE in Paris since its creation in 2002 has led several European capitals (Brussels, Rome, Madrid, and subsequently Riga, Bucharest and Valetta) to organise their own NUIT BLANCHE events. Each year, new cities become candidates for the event.
They have chosen to pool their efforts to ensure the success of a major cultural project on a European scale called "Nuits Blanches Europe".
The cities share their experiences and exchange projects and artists.
According to The "Nuits Blanches Europe" charter, “Nuit Blanche”:
• is a free cultural event open to all which takes place every year from the end of the summer to the beginning of autumn and lasts one full night.
• gives pride of place to contemporary creativity in all its forms: the plastic arts, projections, installations, music, performance art and street theatre, circus arts and travelling shows.
• turns the spotlight on public spaces from every angle: places normally closed off or abandoned, peripheral locations or even prestigious or heritage sites, are revisited in a unique way by artists.
• allows organising cities to reflect together on how life after dark in cities is currently changing and to put in place appropriate services and methods of organisation (local economy, signposting, lighting, safety, services, etc).
• provides an opportunity to promote environmentally-friendly mobility: easier access for cyclists, use of the tram, public transport, river buses.
• encourages interaction between city centres and outlying districts.
• The partner cities of “Nuits Blanches Europe” decide on a joint artistic project to be implemented each year with a view to developing exchanges not only between cities but also between artists and European audiences.
