Living in a large city with a disability
The documentary “living in a large city” is an initiative of the solution non-profit VFG, a Flemish association of people with disabilities.
This socio-cultural association of volunteers is a partner of the socialist mutual health insurance fund. It is there for all citizens regardless of ideological convictions, for disabled people, their friends and their families.
Through this documentary, a group of people with or without disabilities attempts to paint a picture of life in the city, with its challenges and pitfalls.
The aim is twofold: to raise awareness among citizens, on one hand, and to provide a platform for the valuable experience of the disabled, on the other. Many people successfully contend with a handicap and are able to integrate themselves into social networks and be involved in society. It is however up to the governmental authorities to provide a framework that meets the specific needs of the disabled.
The documentary is the product of a week of intensive work by a group of dedicated people determined to make themselves heard. In their quest to discover the city, they highlight the issue of accessibility.
The screening will be followed by a brief debate on the topic of “living in a city with a disability: potentials and dangers”. 2010 is the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Unfortunately, the disabled have been shown to be at greater risk of poverty and exclusion. But there are many ways that this phenomenon can be prevented.
The documentary was created through the collaboration of a group of people under the aegis of the non-profit Piazza dell'Arte.
This initiative was supported by the Brussels Capital Region.
