Camping is an important segment of the European tourism market. In 2008, over 15 % of all tourist nights spent in collective accommodation establishments were spent on campsites, corresponding to an estimated 353 million nights. EU residents made more than 23 million holiday camping trips, of which nearly two thirds were spent in their own Member State.

Exactly 20 years ago the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, the Soviet Union, the United States, France and the United Kingdom signed the Two Plus Four Agreement. Under the terms of this treaty, Germany once again became fully sovereign. Germany renounced all claims to territory east of the Oder-Neisse line, agreed to sign a separate treaty with Poland to reaffirm the present common border and reaffirmed its renunciation of the manufacture and possession of nuclear weapons.
