European Council
The European Council, chaired by President Herman Van Rompuy, will start on Thursday at 17.00 with a meeting with the President of the European Parliament. During a first working session, it will consider the results of the task force on economic governance and discuss preparations for the G-20 summit in Seoul.
The European Council is expected to endorse the report of the task force, and to call for agreement to be reached on legislative proposals by the summer of 2011 so as to enable a rapid and effective implementation of the group's recommendations. It will also consider the issues raised in the task force that will require further work.
Regarding the G-20, it will discuss the EU's priorities for the Seoul summit, including as concerns the key issues of macroeconomic imbalances and the reform of financial regulations.
Over dinner, heads of state and government will review preparations for forthcoming summits with the EU's strategic partners, in particular the United States, Ukraine and Russia.
On Friday, starting at 10.00, a second working session will be largely devoted to European Council conclusions. Preparations for the UN conference on climate change in Cancun will also be discussed.
