European Congress on E-Inclusion 2010: ‘Delivering Digital Europe in Public Libraries'

20 September 2010
-

On 20 and 21 September 2010 Departement CJSM (the Department of Culture, Youth, Sport and Media) will hold a European public libraries conference in the Flemish Parliament in Brussels. The congress is being organised as part of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. It will build on the results of its predecessor, ECEI09.

Different workstreams will consider the role of public libraries in the digital community and their role within the overall network of heritage institutions offering the public online information (such as archives, museums, science libraries, etc.).

The conference will also look at the link with the further development of Europeana, the European digital library, and a debate held on the issue of what a European public libraries policy might comprise and what place a public library can have in a market with competitors like Google, Amazon and Wikipedia.

The congress is part of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. So it will also consider initiatives needed to make knowledge accessible to various social target groups to help achieve an inclusive European community.

The conference has the following aims:

  • Consider the role public libraries can play in supporting diverse European policy areas (such as e-inclusion, entrepreneurship, combating poverty, social inclusion, access to cultural content, creativity, life-long learning, citizenship and accessible information on service provision);
  • Investigate what a European public library could consist of;
  • Study the role of European public libraries in the digital age, including further development opportunities of the 2010 initiative for public libraries such as Europeana.

20/09 : 1.30 PM - 5.30 PM

21/09 : 9.00 AM - 4.00 PM
