An exhibition composed of photographs and films produced by students in Brussels, France, Austria, Poland and Spain who, thanks to the European CULTURE Programme, went off and discovered the ancient palace of Brussels, as well as châteaux in Versailles, Chambord, Schönbrunn, Wilanow and Madrid. A useful discovery-tour tool will be provided for visitors to hone their appreciation of the materials and building techniques of the archaeological site and the Royal Palace.

Thanks to the support of the European CULTURE Programme, the ancient palace of Brussels, the châteaux of Versailles, Chambord, Schönbrunn, Wilanow and Madrid and all members of the Association of Royal Residences in Europe, a week of educational activities about the royal residences and the impact they had on their milieu have been organised for spring 2010. During a week of immersion, the young group discovered the history, architecture and life as it was lived through successive ages in several royal residences in Europe through interactive workshops. They drew links between the residences and suggested commonalities and differences. Discoveries and observations from the week were recorded using video and photography.

For the 2010 European Heritage days, the six partner residences of the project will each be presenting on the exhibition website “Discovery European Heritage through the Royal Residences”. This exhibition brings together a photographic and audiovisual record made by the students in each of the residences, enabling them to convey their own individual interpretation of the matter at hand.

With a view to generating knowledge and awareness among the greater public as to the rich heritage of the royal residences, a brochure presenting all of the members sites of the Royal Residence in Europe association was published and is freely available to the visitor as part of the exhibition.

Finally, visitors will also be allowed to take a discovery-tour at their leisure around the archaeological site and the Coudenberg museum, beside the Royal Palace. The tour will allow visitors to discover the influence that the ancient palace of Brussels would have had on the development of the Royal Quarter. Special emphasis will be placed on the Brussels theme during the 2010 Heritage Days: the working of the stone and the plasterwork.
