Cosmopolitan Chicken - Diversity

From 8 October to 15 December 2010, the works of Koen Vanmechelen will take over the European Space for Sculpture in the regional Tournay-Solvay Park in Brussels. This exhibition, "Cosmopolitan Chicken - Diversity", is organised by the European Space for Sculpture. It fits into the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the year of biodiversity and the twenty years of activities of the European Space for Sculpture.
Koen Vanmechelen is an internationally recognised conceptual artist. He will present his installations in the magnificent green setting that the regional Tournay-Solvay Park represents. His work is the reflection of his scientific research dedicated to chickens, to the existing breeds, to their crossbreeds and to genetic manipulations. By this means the artist tackles fundamental questions of ethics that are related to respect for beings in their differences, to the eternal quest for perfection and to our relationship with nature. Koen Vanmechelen approaches the world of human beings and that of men in an unsettling way, in the manner of Fellini in a famous scene in his film "E la nave va". Doubt and vertigo seep into the viewer’s spirit: where is the boundary between human beings and the animal world, and what if appearances were only deceptive? A play of mirrors, mixtures and illusions ...
The "Cosmopolitan Chicken" is a super hybrid (says Koen Vanmechelen ), the final result of a crossbreeding programme which took years of research.
