Closing Time

In 2010, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) is inviting visual artist Jan Vanriet (1948, Antwerp) to design a grand itinerary through the galleries of the Old and Modern Masters in the museum.
Jan Vanriet will choose 150 works from his thematic series, and combine them with the same number of intrinsically, stylistically or aesthetically related works from the museum collection.
Vanriet’s body of work combines a multitude if intrinsic themes (injustice, violence, abuse of power) with various style characteristics (from figurative to abstract, minimalistic to exuberant). He finds inspiration in his family's past, in society and in the history of art.
This creates striking symbioses, contrasts and new interpretations. Important collection pieces are combined with works of art by Vanriet, from 1980 until present. The theme: an impressive contemporary story of human beings and their shortcomings over the centuries.
The exhibition is spread across no less than 21 rooms in the museum.
