"CINEMA TROÏKA" for a…trio of Presidencies
From Friday 22 to Sunday 24 October, "CINEMA TROÏKA" will celebrate the new Belgian, Spanish and Hungarian cinema at the "BOZAR" in Brussels, for the most part with previously unreleased films.
A symbolic kick-off
The Belgian première of Beyond the Steppes, the epic story of a migration during the Second World War, will kick off the "Cinema Troïka" weekend on Friday, 22 October. This is a symbolic opening, because this first full-length feature film by film-maker Vanja d’Alcantara was co-produced in equal shares by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund and the Centre for Cinema and Audiovisual Affairs of the French-speaking Community of Belgium, with the support of Poland. It is presented with the principal actress in the film, Agnieszka Grochowska, and Vanja d’Alcantara in attendance. Vanja d’Alcantara recently defended her work at the International Film Festival of son Locarno. Both of them will participate in a meeting with the audience at the end of the showing.
Previews … Belgian
On Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 October, the public will discover a selection of recent productions, from each country of the Troïka, for the most part still unreleased. The accent is both on full-length features and on documentaries and short films. The Belgian part includes two previews: Quartier lointain, an adaptation of Jirô Taniguchi’s extremely popular manga by Sam Garbarski (Le tango des Rashevski, Irina Palm) on Saturday 23 October, and the cyber thriller Pulsar, a fresco by ex-film critic Alex Stockman (Verboden te zuchten / Le Pressentiment) (Forbidden to sigh) on Sunday 24 October.
…and Spanish and Hungarian
Insofar as the Spanish part is concerned, on Saturday we can cite the showing of the drama Tres días con la familia for which Mar Coll took the Goya this year as the best hope for the production. On Sunday, the day of the Festival of the Republic, with Pál Adrienn by Ágnes Kocsis (Fresh Air), a full-length feature that was part of the official selection of the Cannes Festival 2010.
Special Screenings and meetings
Finally, the "Cinema Troïka" is also an opportunity see (or see again) other films, documentaries and short features such as: Lost Persons Area, La Régate and Turquaze. In addition, the public will have an opportunity to exchange ideas and impressions with the creative spirits of the seventh art within the framework of meetings planned before or after the majority of showings, as well as during the round table Women and Cinema which will be held in the Salon Royal on Sunday. This will take place in the presence of Fadila Laanan, Minister for Culture, the Audiovisual Sector, Health and Equal Opportunities within the government of the French-speaking Community of Belgium, and of the film-makers Marion Hänsel, Inés Rabadan, Marie Mandy and Violaine de Villers, within the framework of the “Elles Tournent” women’s film festival.
After the festival of Namur and during the festival of Ghent, this weekend event in the middle of the Belgian Presidency is a must for the fans of European cinema!
