Olivier Chastel paves the way for the citizens’ initiative
"We’re very pleased to have adopted in first reading the regulation implementing the citizens’ initiative, a year after the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon," Olivier Chastel said on behalf of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council. The citizens’ initiative is indeed one of the most spectacular innovations of the Treaty of Lisbon and will allow the introduction of participatory democracy at European level.

Olivier Chastel: Europe and its institutions are certainly in action
On 19 October, State Secretary Olivier Chastel presented a status report on the work of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU before the Conference of Committee Chairs of the European Parliament. This body is the political organ that allows better cooperation between the various parliamentary committees. It is composed of the chairs of all of the permanent or special Parliamentary Committees. It is an important body that has the power to make recommendations to the Conference of Presidents on the subject of the work of the committees and establishing the agenda for the session periods.

On 30 September the Secretary of State for European Affairs Olivier Chastel represented the Presidency of the EU Council at the meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs of the European Parliament and representatives of national parliaments. The representatives of the European Parliament, European Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Olivier Chastel exchanged views on the citizens' initiative with the national parliaments.

This Friday, 17 September, Secretary of State Olivier Chastel participated, together with Prime Minister Yves Leterme and the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, in an initial working meeting on strengthening the relationship between the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
