A Bridge to the Music of the Future
A concert dedicated to three innovative composers of the 19th and 20th centuries – Gustav Mahler, Alban Berg and Philippe Boesmans.
If the 20th century is one of the most vibrant in terms of music, this is largely owed to the enormous impetus generated by Viennese music during the 1900s, especially by Gustav Mahler. At the end of this era, Mahler also set milestones such as his unfinished Tenth Symphony, where he tests the boundaries of tonality and paves the way for new music. A century later, we find that the atonal music of the Second School of Vienna, as with Berg’s Orchesterstücke for example, naturally and almost directly follows from Mahler. Further resonances can be noted with Philippe Boesman’s Trakl-Lieder, in which Georg Trakl’s poetry reinforces the link. “Mahler was building bridges to the music of the future.” (Alma Mahler)
