Wallonia and the French Community are two federated entities of the Belgian state. To exercise their decision-making power, the Regions and Communities have their own parliament and their own government. Wallonia (or the Walloon region) has exclusive competence in fields essential to development and wellbeing: economy, employment, training, regional development, environment, housing, agriculture, energy, public works, transport, tourism, heritage, local authorities, applied research, health and local authorities … Its Parliament which is made up of 75 deputies, is elected directly by the Walloon population (3.4 million inhabitants). French Community of Belgium – also known as the “Wallonia-Brussels Community” – unites the French-speaking population of Wallonia and Brussels for the joint management of matters linked essentially to language. Its competence is exercised in the fields of education, culture, audiovisual arts, sport, youth and basic research. Its parliament includes the 75 Walloon deputies and 19 French-speaking deputies from the Parliament of the Brussels Region.
