Walks, fine food, a festive ambience: Wallonia has much to offer in terms of life’s pleasures. With its cities on a human scale, its peaceful villages and its endearing personality, it has always attracted travellers, artists and Europe’s “great” men and women. Its folklore, often with roots extending far back into the past, offers many opportunities for excitement, festivity and feasting.
The capital, Namur, is a prime example of cities that are enjoyable places with their pedestrians, fashion boutiques, delicatessens and taverns serving local beers. Walloon towns offer both consistency and wide-ranging diversity, from Tournai – the elder statesman to Verviers as well as Mons, Charleroi, Nivelles, Marche, Huy and Liège, the city of passion with its prestigious past and a dynamism more evident now than ever.
Wallonia is a land of food lovers and gourmets. Its cooked meats – including the famous Jambon d’Ardenne – date back to the tables of the Roman emperors. The purity of the natural environment has built the renown of Spa waters, meeting places for kings and queens. Chocolates, cheeses and beers – countless “specialities” and the famous three monks (Chimay, Rochefort, Orval) ‑ also feature among the wealth of local produce. Not forgetting the tradition of wines and spirits, with the famous Pèket. Fine dining rooms, prestigious restaurants and friendly cafés lie in wait on every corner of Wallonia.
