The cinema of Wallonia and Brussels is known internationally, with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, twice winners of the Palme d’Or in Cannes (Rosetta in 1999, L’Enfant in 2005), Marion Hansel, Jaco Van Dormael, Bouli Lanners, and Joachim Lafosse. Benoît Poelvoorde, Deborah François, Olivier Gourmet, Cécile de France, Natacha Régnier and Jonathan Zaccaï have left their mark as beacons of excellence on the list of talent.
Song, rock music and dance are among the disciplines developed by artists in these two regions that have achieved renown on top international stages and at major festivals, with Maurane, Ghinzu and Charleroi/Danses. Nor should jazz be overlooked, with the likes of Eric Legnini, Philip Catherine and Steve Houben. Children all over the world know well the touching story of friendship between a small mouse and a big, good-natured bear (Ernest and Célestine) written by the great Gabrielle Vincent.
The lively and spirited characters of Kitty Crowther examine some of the big questions facing mankind. Le Chat by Philippe Geluck is a treat for lovers of the absurd. A rollcall of literary heroes who are worthy successors to Tintin, Spirou, Gaston Lagaffe and the Schtroumpfs.
The world of art, too, has its stars: Michel François, Patrick Corillon, Ann Veronica Janssens. Pierre Alechinsky continues to hold art lovers spellbound. Marcel Broodthaers is the symbolic father of many contemporary artists. Jacques Charlier generates as much fun today as ever. Architecture, design and fashion are coming increasingly to the fore, thanks to the work of Pierre Hebbelinck, Philippe Samain, Xavier Lust, Alain Berteau and Cathy Pill.
