The German-speaking community (Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft: DG) is a member state of the Belgian federation with wide-ranging autonomy. 0.7% of the population of Belgium lives in the DG. The official language of the region is German, also for schools and courts of law. The DG lies to the east of the country along the borders to Germany, the Netherlands and Luxemburg and covers an area of 854 km².
