The contemporary art scene in Flanders is alive and kicking.
In classical music Flemings have been developing a new direction for several decades, but they are also well represented in dance, pop music and jazz.
Flanders was put on the world map of fashion by the Antwerp Six, a group of designers that has been all the rage since the 1980s on catwalks in Milan and Paris.
In the world of the performance arts the dusty theatre for the bourgeoisie made way in the mid-1980s for young talent which threw all theatrical conventions overboard. Flanders also enjoys a good reputation in the dance world thanks to the Ballet of Flanders, a ballet company of international renown.
Finally there are also the Flemish designers and architects who have been striving to fight the tedium of everyday objects for several decades.
