Belgium closes out the Presidency with a deluge of fireworks and music!
This year again, the traditional New Year’s fireworks in Brussels was fired up at the Monts des Arts. Far more than simple pyrotechnical prowess, this year’s event was decked out in the colours of Europe, those of the Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian flags in particular.

At the initiative of the Board of Prosecutors General of Belgium, and in the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, the Prosecutors General and Directors of Public Prosecutions of the Member States of the EU held a meeting in The Hague on 16 December 2010 , with the co-operation and support of Eurojust.
Closing session of the European Year of Combating Poverty
Philippe Courard: "The European Year of Combating Poverty has mobilised millions of people and made them aware of the problems of social insecurity in Europe. Major steps forward have been made in the fight against child poverty. A European recommendation is underway."
Close of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010
Within the framework of the Belgian Presidency and the International Year of Biodiversity, a conference day was organised at the Bois du Cazier. At the conference, the recent decisions taken at the Nagoya Summit and the new commitments of the EU and the stakeholders in Belgium extending beyond 2010 were discussed.

Olivier Chastel paves the way for the citizens’ initiative
"We’re very pleased to have adopted in first reading the regulation implementing the citizens’ initiative, a year after the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon," Olivier Chastel said on behalf of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council. The citizens’ initiative is indeed one of the most spectacular innovations of the Treaty of Lisbon and will allow the introduction of participatory democracy at European level.
