ASEM 8 Summit

On 4-5 October 2010, he ASEM 8 Summit (Asia-Europe Meeting) will bring together heads of state and government from the 48 ASEM partners at the Royal Palace in Brussels. The subjects usually dealt with include political, financial and economic, and socio-cultural matters – these being the 3 ASEM pillars. The ASEM 8 Summit in Brussels aims to serve as a source of inspiration for the international community.
Since 1996, the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) has provided a forum for dialogue between Europeans and Asians on political, financial and economic and socio-cultural matters. In 2010, the ASEM will welcome 48 partners, including representatives from the new official entries of Australia, Russia and New Zealand. The ASEM stimulates cooperation, promotes commerce and investment in enterprise, and encourages exchange among citizens.
The ASEM event largely centres on the biennial summit of the heads of state and government.Beyond these summits, the partners are involved in ministerial meetings and other high-ranking political encounters. And in addition, numerous subsequent activities are organised in more specific and technical areas.
The ASEM 8 Summit taking place in the Royal Palace in Brussels will be the eighth meeting among Asian and European heads of state and government, giving them the occasion to construct common positions.Together, they represent around 58% of the world’s population, 50% of global GDP and more than 60% of international commerce.
In the wake of ASEM 8, a series of parallel events will also be organised to complete the ASEM process. The Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership, Asia-Europe People’s Forum and Asia-Europe Business Forum are forums where each person will approach inter-regional relations from his particular point of view.Belgium has organised a series of activities as part of its preparation, while it is also playing a significant supporting role in another series of awareness events, including the exhibition ‘A Passage to Asia’, which has come about through cooperation between BOZAR (Brussels) and the Asian partners in the ASEM.
