Adapting to the changing climate: time to intensify efforts
At the conference, 150 participants and experts from across the European Union draw up a state of affairs of the European ‘adaptation policy’. The adaptation policy seeks an answer to the question on how to deal with the consequences of climate change in Europe.
The two-day conference on the eve of the beginning of the climate conference in Cancún (Mexico) is led by Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature and Culture Joke Schauvliege, chairwoman of the European Environment Council. The next day, Minister Schauvliege made a statement on behalf of the Council of Ministers of the Environment in the European Parliament of Strasbourg about the coming climate summit in Cancún (Mexico).
Topics at the conference
• What do we know of climate change impacts and its possible effects on (ecosystem and water) services, as well as on economic sectors and activities?
• What are the stakeholder views of the diversity of challenges?
• Are the necessary instruments and procedures in place to deal with adaptation effectively?
• What are important unresolved questions?
• What are adaptation cost estimates for different time horizons, and what are the financing mechanisms?
• What are the implications for public budgeting?
The conference on Adaptation will conclude on Wednesday 24 November as of 2.30 pm with a policy roundtable discussion led by Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works Hilde Crevits. The roundtable discussion will be attended by policymakers from Spain, UK and representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission, including Jos Delbeke, director general of Climate Action. Minister Crevits will then present the conclusions and the conference’s final declaration.
