100 Years of Abstract Art in Belgium - Paintings and sculptures

100 Years of abstract art in Belgium is organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in cooperation with the René Magritte Museum in Jette (Brussels) in the context of the Belgian EU presidency. At the same time the René Magritte Museum will host a more synthetic exhibition around the same topic called 'Un siècle d'art abstrait' to celebrate a century of abstract art. This cooperation offers the unique occasion for a cultural dialogue between a European institution and a renowned local museum.

100 Years of abstract art in Belgium introduces five Belgian artists with a clear focus on covering different provinces of Belgium. They represent the geometric approach in abstraction - also known as constructive or concrete art.

One woman, four men – five different universes: one common artistic language but with a different tone depending on the personality of each of them. Their work combines a certain audacity in their compositions and a reflected balance between form and colours.

The artists explore the geometry of forms according to their characters, but with respect to certain aesthetic rules developed in the history of European abstraction. The exhibition is a beautiful illustration of Belgian culture which is at one time open to artistic tendencies without borders, but also desiring to respect its individuality. For the variation of the tendencies, Belgian abstraction evokes in its way the Belgian spirit, multi-folded and open.
